Director of Bands

    Zach Rooksby is in his eighth year as a band director in Chesapeake.  His responsibilities include directing the Symphonic Band, 9th Grade Band, the Marching Band, Jazz Band, and coordinating the indoor guard and drumline activities. Zach received his Bachelor’s in Instrumental Music Education K-12 at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA.  He studied percussion with Bill Rice and Todd Johnson and conducting with Pat Rooney and Robert McCashin.       

   Mr. Rooksby was a member of the 2000 world champion Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps.  He has also served as percussion instructor, arranger, and drum major for the Carolina Gold all-aged Drum and Bugle Corps in Raleigh, NC, and percussion instructor Luray High School in Luray, VA.  Mr. Rooksby has served as counselor and instructor at the Bands of America Summer Symposium and the James Madison University Summer Band Camp.  He has also performed with the Shenandoah Valley Symphony and  Eastern Mennonite Bach Festival Orchestra.  

Mr. Rooksby's affiliations include MENC, VMEA, Percussive Art's Society, and the Smartmusic Advocate Program.  He actively serves as an arranger, clinician, and adjudicator throughout the Virginia and North Carolina.  He also performs with the Virginia Wind Symphony in Norfolk, VA.  He currently resides in Chesapeake with his wife Tara.
