I Am a Marching Band Parent

by Stephanie Cooke

I am a marching band parent.

I taxi. I fundraise. I hydrate. I sew. I mow. I concession.

I am a marching band parent.

I chaperone. I plume. I zip. I fasten. I carry. I push. I cheer.

I am a marching band parent.

I console. I support. I buy. I praise. I meet. I hear. I laugh. I cry. I watch.

I watch many become one; kids become performers; parents become believers and hard work pay off.

I watch freshman begin, transform and move up.

I watch sophomores start to lead and to teach.

I watch juniors become leaders and role models.

I watch seniors inspire and prepare to move on.

I watch directors and staff affect children in ways that will stay with them forever.

I watch children learn that determination and success are worth fighting for through aches & pain and cold & rain. I watch.

I watch my child begin to believe he can do anything, because he has done marching band.

I am a marching band parent. I learn.

I learn there is no "I" only "we".

I learn the meaning of pride every time they take the field for competition.

I learn scores can't judge hearts, and trophies don't judge character.

I learn from watching kids who want to be part of something larger than themselves.

I am a marching band parent. I know.

I know it was all worth it. I know I'd do it all again. I know what it REALLY means to say:

I am a marching band parent.
